Montclair Girl’s Basketball is focused on and off the court. Two study hall sessions per week, as per agreed and signed in their contracts. The Mounties look to do a lot of prevention this year. Prevention of academic suspensions/parents wanting to pull players off due to grades, behavioural suspensions, etc. Making sure we keep the focus and emphasis on student-athlete is key. The golden rule of being a student-athlete is you must be a student first.
After an allotted 55 minutes – 1 hour for study hall, the young ladies hit the floor for a 2 hour practice. Ideally, Coach wants there to be more time for both study hall and practice. On the bright side, the system is currently working for the program.
The team is also required by contract to report their grades every Friday to the Assistant Coach Jones. Without participation, the young ladies are not allowed to practice until it is turned in. The team has had success with this as well. If they forgot or just haven’t turned in their grades, their peers do a good job at helping hold each other accountable.
Coach Hall emphasizes control what you have control over. “They can all control the outcome of their grades. I just want to teach them the life lessons of accountability and responsibility through their academics.”
As the team rolls into Holiday Tournament time, heading to Bound brook Decemeber 27th and 29th, they look to keep their focus on structure and consistency. The break will give the program valuable time to keep and reagin strength, as well as work on the small details that need work.
